Hair Growth Cycle
Understanding the stages of your natural hair cycle will be helpful for addressing common hair issues and promoting healthy hair growth. Hair growth is a cyclical process that progresses through four carefully orchestrated phases: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen.
Anagen (Growth Phase): Anagen is the active growth phase of the hair cycle, During the anagen phase, hair cells rapidly divide, leading to the elongation of the hair shaft. Typically, about 85-90% of the hair on your scalp is in the anagen phase at any given time, making it the most critical phase for determining hair length and density. Hair grows about half an inch per month (up to 6 inches a year). This phase lasts 3-5 years.Catagen (Transition Phase): Catagen is the transitional phase of the hair growth cycle that follows the active anagen phase. Lasting approximately 2 to 3 weeks, the catagen phase is a short period during which the hair follicle begins to shrink and detach from the dermal papilla, the structure that supplies nutrients to the hair. This process effectively halts hair growth as the follicle prepares to enter the resting phase.
Telogen (The Resting Period): Telogen is the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. This phase typically lasts about 3 to 4 months. During the telogen phase, the hair follicle is inactive and not actively growing. The hair remains in the follicle but is not anchored as strongly, making it more easy to sheddings.
Exogen (The Shedding Phase): Exogen is the shedding phase of the hair growth cycle, often considered an extension of the telogen phase. During the exogen phase, the hair that has been in the resting (telogen) phase is released from the scalp and naturally sheds. The follicle re-enters the anagen (growth) phase, starting the cycle anew. This phase can last from a few days to weeks, and it’s normal to lose about 50-100 hairs per day.
